In 2016, Moët Hennessy pushed the frontiers of winemaking by launching Ao Yun, its new red wine produced in the remote North corner of Yunnan, at the edge of the Himalaya and just below the sacred Meili Mountain, alongside the Mekong River. Ao Yun’s first vintage, the 2013, was acclaimed by the critics and the wine enthusiasts worldwide. Ao Yun’s adventure continues with the launch of a second vintage, the 2014.
The 2014 vintage shows the same freshness, elegance, superb balance and subtle tannins that characterize this terroir, with even more precision and complexity than the previous vintage. Ao Yun’s French Winemaker, Maxence Dulou, explains: “The 2014 vintage was a warmer and dryer than average season to which we have adapted and optimized our vineyard management. This allowed to produce a wine showing more complexity than the 2013”.
Maxence Dulou added: “Since the beginning of this fantastic adventure, we are learning how to handle this unique terroir, which is incredibly challenging since it was unexplored. It is a constant learning process.”
When speaking of the extraordinary potential that Ao Yun terroir offers, Jean-Guillaume Prats, President of Estates & Wines, the Moët Hennessy Wine Division, says: “We are learning towards more precision, having the trouble not to benchmark ourselves since Ao Yun is the one and only estate located in the upper Mekong valley. No comparison can be made.”
